This activity List: Some sample ideas/topics related to Institutions. Depending on the level of the student will depend on the objective and so these concepts may either begin at a level of raising awareness of institutions related to democracy to making a connection…how do these institutions connect with the concept of democracy?

This activity List: Some sample ideas/topics related to Institutions. Depending on the level of the student will depend on the objective and so these concepts may either begin at a level of raising awareness of institutions related to democracy to making a connection…how do these institutions connect with the concept of democracy?
- Brainstorm a list of government institutions in Georgia – where are they? What is the function of the institution? Who works there? What do they do? (Students can choose different institutions or see images related to same, describe them, who works there, what it is called)..awareness within the city.
- Who is the mayor? Where does he work?
- What is the Public Defender? Prosecutor? What do they do? Where do they work? What is their connection to democracy?
- Work as a class to brainstorm different problems/solutions to classroom and vote on which is most feasible, most important
- Vote – favorite food, place, sport, hobby, whatever would interest your students at that group level.
- Zugdidi institutions – what can they identify? What do they know about? Can each group describe a particular institution and its function and why important to democracy?
- Voting as a concept – what is the connection to democracy? Why is it important?
- What is the term “power to the people” mean and what is the connection?
- Where is the Mayor’s office? City Hall? Police? Other public agencies?
- What is done at each?
- Read about voting process in Georgia and America. Compare. How old do you need to be? Where does it happen?
- What do you know about a courthouse? What happens in court? What is the connection to democracy?
- Students vote on favorite singers, movies, needs of classroom or needs of school, student president, best musician, best movie, book, etc.
- Students create their own political party – what would they campaign for? What would they change? What would be their promises? What would be their goals? If students prepare for this ahead of time, it can be very interesting.
