Educator, trainer,
and lifelong learner

I am an ESL teacher and teacher trainer based in Berkeley, CA. Since 2024, I have been teaching ESL at Laney College in Oakland, CA. I also continue to work part-time at the International Education Center at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa as curriculum coordinator and in-service faculty trainer — a program I have been part of since 2004.

My primary professional interests are the Science of Learning, reflective practice, and language learning and teaching. I write a Substack blog called The Learning Cue, which explores the Science of Learning through the lens of playing and learning pool.

I am a teacher trainer with the SIT Graduate Institute in Brattleboro, VT, and taught in the MATESOL program at Marlboro College Graduate School from 2015 to 2019. I founded Berkeley LTC in 2006, through which I have worked with large labor unions designing and delivering instructor training for subject matter experts who teach their members. I have also worked with PH International since 2012, designing and delivering teacher training for educators from Georgia, Armenia, and Abkhazia. Central to nearly all of my training work is my Principles of Learning — a guiding document I began developing in 2015 that distills key research findings from the Science of Learning into practical principles for educators.

I am an avid language learner — I study Georgian, my wife Eka’s native language — and I love playing pool. I live in Berkeley with Eka and our son, Luca.
